SWANSEA SANCTUARY CITY and INFORMATION ON MIGRANTS AND MINORITIES IN WALES: We Are All Brothers and Sisters of the Ox.

Swansea declaring itself as a City of Sanctuary is following in the best of Welsh traditions as providing Sanctuary, as for Jewish People escaping pograms in Russia during the 19th Century also those escaping Nazi persecution prior to WWII. It was these Jewish Refugees who established a number of Textile Manufacturing factories in the South that continued to flourisah many years after WWII. Like wise Swansea became a Sanctuary for the Irish centred on Greenhill, later many Italians in particular would settle in Swansea as they did throughout Southern Wales, today Swansea has a growing Asian and Black Community. Before any one moans just remember how many Welsh People have over the centuries settled in English and other cities throughout the World. Not least let us keep in mine the fact that Swansea along with other communities of Southern Wales give refuge to 1000's of Basque Children to escape the attacks on Euskadi by Franco's Fascists and the bombers of the Italian and German Airforce. A future post will provide further information on this and the fourthcoming 75th Anniversary Commemoration of the Spanish Civil War and coming of the Basque Children to Wales.
